Work has begun on a new environmentally friendly accommodation project in Andamooka, which is hoped to help ease Roxby's housing shortage.
The $12million project has taken the form of a fully sustainable "Eco-Village" which will boast 62 apartments.
The developers - Unique Accommodation - ensured that the site is prepared ahead of the scheduled date for the start of building, with the ground already in the process of being levelled.
The company plans to see development begin within three weeks, with the finished date scheduled for September 2008.
All assessments have been approved and the company is now awaiting the final touches from the engineers before building can begin.
"There are a lot of things that have to be taken into account, such as the solar panels and water recycling system," company chief executive officer Tom Knight said.
"It's a large development so its design is fairly complex.”
The company has also taken the community’s concerns into consideration in its final design, following a community consultation session several months ago.
"People were worried about location, proximity, aesthetics and there were also concerns for the town's infrastructure," Mr Knight said.
The development is located directly behind the Andamooka Primary School.
Its design has incorporated a 'desert' colour scheme so that the village will blend in to the town's character.
Mr Knight also promises that the development is self-sufficient and will place minimal, if any strain on the towns existing infrastructure.
