The Roxby Downs Community Board has hit out at a proposal for an aquatic facility in the town.
Board chairperson Les Rochester has written to town administrator Bill Boehm opposing the proposal, and urging him to not include the centre in the next financial year's council budget.
"All of the board's research has shown that an indoor heated aquatic centre just hasn't been on the radar of this community for years," Mr Rochester said.
"Why would you need a heated swimming pool in Roxby Downs?"
Mr Rochester said the town more urgently needed youth facilities and a kerbside recycling service.
"We believe the large financial commitment could be directed towards much more worthwhile and needed projects," he said.
The community would have to pay off the commitment to a centre like the one proposed over many years, Mr Rochester said.
"This commitment would prevent other much-needed community services and facilities being implemented during that time," he said.
Roxby Leisure commissioned the development of concept plans for the centre in response to consultations by the forum and BHP Billiton.
Public submissions have now closed on the plans, which were on display for four weeks at the Cultural Centre.
The concept plans included a heated six-lane 25m pool and a hydrotherapy pool for rehabilitation and fitness programs.
Mr Boehm was not available for comment.
