New dance school opens in Roxby

4/07/2008 1:15:00 PM
A new not-for-profit dance school has sprung up in Roxby Downs and is soon to spread to Andamooka and Woomera.

School Administrator, Kirstie Goldfinch is a young mother with a mission - to give every child and adult in the region access to dance and drama tuition.

Operating out of the community church in Roxby, the community hall in Andamooka and eventually out of a venue somewhere in Woomera Mrs Goldfinch wants to turn people onto the joys of dance.

"Our most popular classes at present are the Zumba classes with our new teacher Lena Boag," Mrs Goldfinch said.

Zumba is a name derived from a Columbian word that means to move fast and have fun and has more than 9000 instructors world wide she said.

"I have been trying to get this school up and running for well over a year now and I've sunk a lot of my money into making it happen."

There were some early hiccups as teachers Mrs Goldfinch was attempting to bring to Roxby could not come.

The good news is that the school now have a new local teaching Mrs Goldfinch said.

"We are finding our way still," she said.

“It has been a struggle to find a venue that can give us access to a working space regularly and at reasonable rates.

"The other class that is proving popular is the Thursday evening Cheer Squad classes for 11 to 15 year olds on Thursday evenings.

“We want to start small and grow this school organically."

All proceeds from student fees are to be ploughed back into growing the school.

"We have tried to structure our fees to give discounts to those people who pay for 10 or six class packages.

“We find it suits the work schedules of our students and recreational dancers."

The packages allow dancers to buy classes in bundles that can be used over time.

"This suits families that may have to drop out for a few days because they may be travelling during a break in their spouses work schedule," she said.

Plans are afoot for Latin dance nights, circus school and toddlers classes and much more.
