RDAS holiday program keeps kids busy

16/07/2008 4:51:00 PM
The Roxby Downs Area school holiday program was busy last week.

Diane Stanton has been director now for well over twelve months and her program is buzzing.

She also runs the OSHC program during school term.

She wants more space.

"Quality childcare is the backbone of working families," said Diane at the program's cosy home the school site, towards the end of the first week of the holidays.

"We run a nationally accredited program here.

“We employ staff from a range of age groups … our younger staff members bring new things to the program … our older workers bring the wisdom of experience," Diane said.

"We put a big emphasis on crafts here … we even teach knitting, and it’s very popular.”

Diane can also access support from government agencies to support families of children with special needs.

"We can conference with parents and design a program that is appropriate and challenging … all our programs are age/ability appropriate … we try to design the right mix of activities for all our children."

Diane has worked long hours to provide a secure environment for those children who need to come to school early, or stay late.

The team provide care from 6.30am until 8.30am, and then again between 3pm and 6pm.

During the school holidays the program runs from 6.30am until to 6pm.

This week program goes to Woomera for a lunch in Breen Park and some 10-pin bowling.

"Next holidays we are planning a camp in the old school at Woomera … we will be able to do some astronomy and have campfire stories," Diane said.

"We try to provide the children with a relaxed environment … we like them to come in and feel at home."

There is a shipping container of sports and recreation equipment right next door to the centre’s room.

The group often finds itself outdoors enjoying a vigorous game of softball or football.

"I would like to see as many as fifty students here every day," said Diane.

"We want to build on and make more space … we have the demand there to be met and we are ready to take it on … we have 12 different nationalities represented in our student population."
