Rotary welcomes first exchange group

24/04/2008 10:28:00 AM
The up-and-coming Roxby Downs Rotary Club welcomed its first ever Group Study Exchange group with open arms on Monday.

Group Study Exchange is an Educational Program of The Rotary Foundation.

It offers teams of professional men and women the opportunity to study their vocations, the institutions, cultures and ways of life of different countries.

The visiting group were young professionals from Brazil, including a Chemist, a journalist, English teachers and a theologian and history teacher.

Although sponsored by the Port Augusta Rotary Club, only one of the five visitors - the team leader - was a Rotary member.

A Danish youth exchange student and Port Augusta Rotary representatives also accompanied the group.

Nominated Roxby Downs club president Kaye Doyle said it was a good opportunity for the visitors to get a taste of the outback.

"In less than 24 hours we managed to have the group taken on a BHP Billiton Mine Tour, join us for a Rotary dinner with members and guests, followed by pancake breakfast," Ms Doyle said.

"The group then travelled to Andamooka to visit an opal mine in operation … I do not think the Brazilians will forget our town of Roxby for long time!"

Ms Doyle said the visit marked a significant milestone in the growth of Rotary in Roxby Downs.

"Last night really showed us all that we have begun our journey in Rotary in Roxby," she said.

"We opened our homes for the team members to stay overnight and to experience Aussie hospitality at its best, we have all formed friendships that will last a life time."

The exchange group's team leader Nei Borba said he found his visit "fascinating" and hoped this visit would open up the door to many more visiting groups.

"I really hope that we are the first of many other visitors to this town so they can see what we have seen," he said.

Following the hearty reception from the Roxby Downs Rotary Club, the group then left from Andamooka to return to Port Augusta via Woomera.
