Meet your footy coaches

Local football is set to kick off in a big way this season as new leadership brings on exciting new challenges and directions.

Four of the five Woomera and District Football League teams have new coaches, and all boast "fresh blood" on the ranks.

This week, the Roxby Downs Sun caught up with this year's league coaches to get an insight into their coaching approach and what 2008 has in store for their teams.

Olympic Dam Football Club

Coach: Les Myles

Age: 51

Les has an extensive football history that spans almost 30 years, and at his highest level has played for North Adelaide, Saint Mary's (Darwin) and Morningside (Brisbane).

In 1991 he coached Jamestown Football Club's premiership win.

Les last coached the team in 1999.

Despite Olympic Dam's streak-breaking loss to Andamooka last year, Les said there's no pressure to guarantee a premiership title this season.

Instead, the self-confessed "fitness guru" hopes to give players an edge by improving their stamina and playing capacity.

Andamooka Football Club

Coach: Corey Lynch

Age: 33

Corey began his football career as a junior at North Whyalla Football Club, who he later played about 150 games for.

Since moving to Roxby Downs with his family last year, Corey has been keen to get involved with a family-oriented club and said it was Andamooka that fitted the bill.

After last year's premiership win, there's a bit of pressure to live up to the mark, however Corey said he was confident he could take all of this year's challenges in his stride.

Roxby Districts Football Club

Coach: Craig Paull

Age: 43

Craig is a long-term resident of Roxby Downs who, with his family, has been involved in various junior and senior sporting activities over the years.

At age seven, Craig began his football career in Newman, Western Australia.

He has since played for the Tigers, Subiaco and Armadale.

As the Roxby Miner's newest coach, Craig plans to help develop a short and sharp game and put a strong focus into players' recovery rates.

He has also hinted at a stronger team this year, and said the club has "recruited well" from outside the town.

"The atmosphere in the club is electric and it's really giving the players the confidence to bring out their best," he said.

Coober Pedy Football Club

Coach: Zaaheer McKenzie

Age: 33

Zaheer grew up playing football in Port Augusta with 2008 to be his second year of coaching Coober Pedy.

The "Saints" have been gearing up for a big year, having started their training well before Christmas.

It's an approach Zaheer said is working well with the players and he hopes it will get them one step closer to the premiership.

Coober Pedy has pulled a lot of young players onto their ranks, and it is hoped that all players will have the chance to have an equal run on the field.

Hornridge Football Club

Coach: Darren Male

Age: 34

A "boy from Wirrulla", Darren is no newcomer to playing football in remote towns, having played football in Townsville and Kalgoorlie before coming to Roxby Downs.

Since moving to town, he has spent most of his time with Hornridge, and played in the 2002 premiership team.

There will be a strong focus on discipline this year, as Darren promises to not take lightly to half-hearted efforts.

"Previously there's been the idea that it's ok to get beaten by 80 or so points, and that's not something I'm going to accept this year," he said.
