Mixed bag of volleyball games played

10/06/2008 2:59:00 PM
In the last game before the competition breaks for the Queen's Birthday holiday, the Roxby Volleyball Association saw a mixed bag of games.

In two of the four games, the winning team took all sets.

However, in the other two games the result was much closer with only a few points separating each side.

Some of the teams who have been traditionally less strong have begun to show some true brilliance in their plays, with a number of crowd-pleasing, hard-hitting routines being played out on Monday night.

Across the board, the spiking and blocking this week was an indication of the high level of talent that's found its way into the competition.

Some seriously hard and fast hits were returned across the net, much to the surprise of both the spiker and the person on the receiving end of the spike!

There has certainly been some great volleyball played recently and the final rounds of the season will prove just as exciting.

In the first of the early games on Monday night, Phoenix defeated Block Its easily after an undermanned Block Its had to pull in a number of new players to fill the side.

Although inexperienced in the rules and techniques of the game, the new players showed some real fighting spirit and an ability to get the ball back over the net quickly.

This element of surprise had Phoenix on the back foot a number of times however their experience proved too strong in the end, with Rob Kraack of Phoenix taking top points for most valuable player.

On the opposite court, Tigers played a tight-knit game against Los As Say Toon Us with the game ending up with conflicting scores.

Tigers were awarded the game due to them winning three sets to one, however the final score showed Los As Say Toon Us won three more points overall.

Glenn Bassett of the Tigers was given the MVP title after impressing the umpire with a consistently clean technique that produced some impressive shots.

The second timeslot saw Los Tintos beat Sina's Saints by the narrowest of margins, winning an extra two sets but only doing so with an extra four points.

The Saints were at times inspirational, with the team working well together to produce some amazing spikes and blocks.

A new member of the association, Maxwell Chodewa (Los Tintos), was given MVP status for the game after producing some powerful spikes and blocks throughout the game.

In the final game of the evening, Benders defeated Hornridge (5 sets to 0, 122 - 80) after Hornridge gave the reigning premiers a fright in the first set.

The set was pushed into extra points due to it being too close to call within the usual 25 points.

Using this as motivation, Benders stepped up their game to win with Nick Backhouse from Benders being named MVP.

A reminder to all players that there will be no games next Monday due to the public holiday, however play will resume the following week.

There are two weeks left of the season's scheduled matches with a round robin competition being played prior to the usual end-of-season wrap up and presentation night on Monday June 30.
