OD and Roos put bodies on the line

16/07/2008 4:57:00 PM
With Roxby Districts going to Coober Pedy to do battle, it was left for one match at Roxby and that saw the reigning premiers and only team to defeat Roxby this year, the Andamooka Roos, take on Olympic Dam Devils.

With both teams missing a couple of players, the Roos without midfielder Michael Uhlik and centre half forward Stuart Fernci and the Devils without back man Zane Petty and Todd Martin, which saw the Devils have two new players and only 21 players.

From the first bounce it looked to be a hard contest with bodies being put on the line all day.

Jake Bowden from the Roos showed a lot of courage as he took hard bumps all day from the devils which some others wouldn't get up from.

The first goal came from the right boot off Trent Ormond-Allen, who was about 60m out and unloaded with a big torpedo.

That goal lifted the devils who continued to attack keeping the Roos to one goal for the quarter, which was a good kick from 50 out into the wind from T Ripley.

The second quarter saw the Devils kick into the wind and still kick goals still keeping the Roos score low, the run from the Devils from both wing man Cameron Green and Dion Mckenna who was awarded best on ground was superb.

At half time the Devils were well in front and in the best form for the year.

After the break the Devils looked to increase their margin and the Roos look to come back and have a go at winning as they did the previous week against the Miners.

With the Devils still not making a change to their starting 18 the Roos would have thought of going into the second half with a bit more pace, but it didn't turn out that way as the Devils kept attacking and scoring making their lead bigger and bigger.

At three-quarter time the Devils made their first change and during the last quarter with the lead over 100 points they made a couple more changes giving one of the debutants a chance and a young fella a go.

The final score saw the Devils beat the Roos by 131 points.

Congratulations to Andamooka Roos as it celebrates its twentieth season anniversary.
