Roxby Miners overpower Devils in a thriller

10/06/2008 2:58:00 PM
Miners 1 has made a stand in the senior netball, taking on and defeating premiers Green Devils in a thriller.

The game commenced and was goal for goal until Green Devils broke the run and edged in front.

The lead did not last long and Green Devils were unable to make good with the turnovers, losing the ball through forced passes.

Miners were in place to pick up, playing a tight defensive game.

Accuracy at both ends of the court was evident with an awesome display from all shooters in a very physical, high scoring game.

The pressure remained on the defensive and attacking skills of the mid court players, fitness was a key indicator to the success of the winning team.

Green Devils lacking their usual flair will have some work to do to regain their lead in the competition.

Miners brought out the best in its younger players with Elyse Weir playing an excellent game in wing attack and Jess Finzel, strong throughout the game in goal shooter.

Best on court for Green Devils was Hayley Summerton, playing a tough game in the centre court.

Final result Miners 1, 57 to Green Devils 49.

Hornridge 1 has regained the lead in the competition, through a high percentage score of 54 over Miners 2, 24.

Hornridge more than doubled their opponent's score in each of the quarters, playing a hard game and turning the ball on many occasions.

Miners, with a depleted line up, maintained consistency throughout the game, making changes in only the second quarter.

It was a defenders’ game this week with Miners’ best, defender Bryony Futeril very good in goal defence and a stand out on court.

Hornridge was boosted with the return of Bec Penglase who played a positive game, but it was Hornridges' Kasiah Barrand starting in the wing defence position setting her up for a strong game, before returning to usual position of circle defence in the last half.

The A2 game for the night was between Yellow Devils and Hornridge 2.

This game was always going to be a good close fought game.

Both teams of even ability put on a good display, but it was Hornridge who capitalised on their turnovers outscoring the Yellow Devils in the first quarter to lead the game by three goals.

Yellow Devils responded winning the second and evening the third quarters but Devils lacked the run and control to hold on, in the fourth quarter going down again by 5 goals, eventually losing the game by 7.

Melissa Roach worked tirelessly in wing defence for her team, slowing the Hornridge attack, while Naomi Bowley was noticeably one of the best for Hornridge, teaming up with fellow centre court defender Megan Crawford to block the flow into attack for Yellow Devils.

Final score Hornridge 2, 35 to Yellow Devils 28.

The first B grade match between Andamooka and Hornridge 3 was a one-sided affair, Andamooka doubling Hornridge’s final score.

Andamooka posted a huge first half score of 39 over Hornridge 13 and was sure to be a blow out, until Hornridge made some half time changes putting Prue Duldig back into defence with Jodie Pedder, both players combining to slow the Andamooka onslaught.

Hornridge were able to hold Andamooka to an 18 goal last half while adding 15 goals to its own tally.

Hornridge playing light on this week without the services of Nat Elliot and Jodie Brind were unable to match the ability of Andamooka.

Amanda Whittaker was playing at her best in the centre court for Andamooka, switching to play a quarter in goal defence did not slow her game.

Andamooka with an easy win, final score was 56 to Hornridge 3, 28.

Miners 3 caused an upset over OD Devils in the second B grade game for the evening.

OD Devils who have been on top of the ladder in recent weeks were caught out with experienced players absent from the side, relying on fill-ins to make up the team.

While the team performed well, it wasn't enough to hold off Miners who have grown from strength to strength throughout the season.

The group of young Miners has been training hard under the watchful eye of coach Michelle Paull and has been producing some classy netball.

Cassie Weir played a solid game for her team - her versatility, height and accuracy was an essential ingredient in Miners' win.

Best for Devils was Tori McGauchie who tried hard in defence.

Final score Miners 38 to OD Devils 31.

Our netball is now on a week break, returning on June 13.

We look forward to seeing our spectators out again for another round of netball.
