Smoke on the track

18/04/2008 8:51:51 AM
Spectators and participants alike were all witnesses to an eventful night of racing at the Red Dunes Raceway on Saturday night.

The night saw the Roxby Downs Sporting Car Club hold its second meet for the year, with four Whyalla competitors joining the local drivers for a night of action.

There were plenty of thrills and spills on the night, which eventually depleted the field of competitors.

2007 Club Champion, Tony Webber RD1 came together with Brenda Field RD113, putting both cars out of the night’s racing.

Later on that evening, the track was engulfed in smoke after Shannon Warren RD49 discovered a small fire in his vehicle.

The smoke made it difficult for those behind him to see ahead, forcing cars to scatter through the infield and around the track.

All drivers managed to escape unscathed.

Another highlight of the evening was the running of the "Bartlett Cup".

In honour of club president Carl Bartlett's fiftieth birthday celebration, a race amongst his family members was held to prove once and for all who the best Bartlett is.

John Ryan RD53 came out on top, followed soon after by Wayne Bartlett RD38 and Steve Bartlett RD45 respectively.

It was a good night had by all.

The drivers who made the trip up from Whyalla enjoyed the racing and praised the facilities on offer in Roxby.

Not many tracks around the State are equipped for night racing and for these drivers it was the first of more trips planned to the Red Dunes Raceway.
