Miners win tough game

4/07/2008 1:37:00 PM
Olympic Dam and Roxby Districts’ rivalry continued last weekend as they met for the second time in the minor rounds this year.

The undefeated and under-manned Miners were looking to continue their winning streak, with OD missing a couple players.

The Miners kicked the first couple goals but OD got there first after a 50m penalty was given which resulted in a goal.

At half time the scores were close and neither team was completely in control.

In the third term it was as hard-fought as the first half, there was a lot of bodies put on the line and some resulted in free kicks.

At the start of the last quarter, OD seemed like it was going to fight right to the end, until the last five or ten minutes.

The Miners pulled out in front, with good play and two 50m penalties given one after another.

A late hip and shoulder on the wing was put on by an OD player, the first 50 was given.

Then after backchat the other one was given, putting a Miner playing directly in front of goals five metres out.

The Miners ran away at the end winning a hard-fought contest.

The second 'battle' of the day was a one-sided affair, as Hornridge beat Coober Pedy.

Coober Pedy played with 18 men on the field and that did not help them one bit, as Hornridge controlled the majority of the game.

Much to Coober Pedy's effort, it could not get going but did not give up.

Hornridge's midfield dominated with Tyrone Price in the ruck and their on-ballers getting around him.

Hopefully for Coober Pedy it can get a 22-man side together next week to take on the undefeated Miners and give them a run for there money.

On a sad note it looks like one of the umpires has decided to hang up his whistle.
