Netball at its wildest

26/05/2008 10:15:00 AM
Friday night netball was experienced at its wildest this week, with Roxby weather turning unusually wet, windy and very cold.

For the first time this season our netball teams have had to consider the environmental factor while all striving to play at their best.

The game of the round was without a doubt Miners 1 fantastic win over the improved Hornridge 1 side.

Miners 1 were out strong from the start with an 11 to six goal first term, had the court covered and capitalised on every opportunity.

Miners with a strong line up were fortunate to gain strength from former player Alicia Roberts, home from school in Adelaide.

Roberts playing at wing attack provided added height and ability to the centre court.

Hornridge never gave up and were starting to make a difference when they lost the services of Kasiah Barrand through injury.

Hornridge tried hard but were unable to catch up and found themselves down by 10 goals at the final siren.

Miners’ Jess Finzel and Meaghan Kielys' ability to adjust to the weather found their goal shooting accuracy on target over that of their usually accurate counterparts in Hornridge.

Final score Miners 1, 42 to Hornridge 1, 32.

The night of netball commenced with Green Devils 56 having an easy win over their fellow club team Yellow Devils 25.

Green Devils’ shooters Grace Hollitt and Melissa Tucker both shot well and seemingly made their task look relatively easy in the blowing wind.

Jess Horne for Yellow Devils was also a strong player for her team, utilising the circle well to advance closer to the goal, Horne played a very tough game against strong opposition and from the sideline was noticeably one of the best on court.

Yellow Devils although facing another tough game ahead with Hornridge 1 this Friday, is looking far more confident than the team at the commencement of the season.

On court two at the 6.30pm timeslot Hornridge 2 and Miners 2 fought it out with Hornridge 2 taking the honours 39 to 31.

Hornridge 2 posting a very good first quarter with a 12 to 6 result.

Miners 2 rallied and found some form to improve on their first quarter start, Miners 2 got within 2 goals heading into the final term with an opportunity to overcome their opponents.

It was not to be, Miners 2 were again outdone in the final quarter, Hornridge 2 finishing well with a 12 to 6 goal final term closing out the game with an 8 point win.

Best for Hornridge 2 were Naomi Bowley and Kayla Langdon, Shana Forrest was excellent in goals for Miners 2.

The B grade game featuring Miners 3 up against Andamooka were the only teams fortunate to avoid the extreme outdoor weather. Andamooka winning with a comfortable 14 point win.

Andamooka strong all over the court regained the services of Amanda Whitaker who was absent from the team last week.

Whitaker had full control of the court in the first half, swapping out to defence for the last quarter.

Miners made some changes at half time, which saw Cassie Weir out of wing defence and into the goal circle, shooting well for her team.

Miners 3 put up a strong fight and posted a very good final score of 37, playing their best netball in the third quarter out playing Andamooka by six goals.

Final score Andamooka 51 to Miners 3, 37.

The second time slot commencing at 8pm had the teams playing in a drizzle of rain, dropping the temperature.

Teams found it a tougher contest to run out the game, changes to the teams meant bringing on players cold and without time for a warm up.

Devils down by six goals at half time, and who only had the one reserve, were able to run out the last quarter with warm legs, successful over Hornridge by eight goals.

Defenders Laura McIlwaine for Devils and Rhijana Penglase for Hornridge, were stand out players.

Hornridge 3 yet to secure a win for the season are unable to overcome the strength of their opponents within the B grade competition.

With the added strength of Jodie Brind to their goal end this team will be sure to improve.
